Dust particles sometimes collect on the image sensors of Digital Single Lens Reflex cameras (DSLRs). Such particles often leave marks on the pictures taken with such a camera. The question therefore arises whether such marks may be used for forensic identification of the camera used to take the picture. The paper considers this question by investigating the impact of various camera and lens factors, such as focal length and recording format used.
It is suggested that a grid overlay is used for matching.
Based on this initial work, the paper also quantifies the probability that a false positive match will occur. This clearly demonstrates that the technique holds potential.
