Abstract

The question about a suitable theory to serve as scientific grounds for a digital forensic science remains open. Such a theory needs to satisfy the demands imposed by science and justify facts that are derived as evidence by using the theory. A number of grounding theories have been proposed in the past. This paper revisits the three the three most prominent of these theories (those by Gladyshev, Carrier and Cohen) and examine them to (a) determine the requirements they suggest for such a theory, (b) consider their primary differences and (c) assess them from the norms that exist for science. This enables us to sketch the outlines of a new theory that better reflects the scientific requirements and intended application of forensic science in a digital context.
